"il Centesimo": The 100th Drum.
Seven Six Drum Company is proud to present our 100th drum, “il Centesimo”. It is a 7.5x14” solid stave custom snare drum made from 3/4” thick 100% Olivewood solid staves with a 1” center section of 3/4” thick wenge staves.
I wanted this drum to be a tribute to all of the builders who have either given me advice or inspired me over the past 3 years, so I incorporated custom hardware and hoops from two great builders, as well.
It is made from Olivewood because it’s a beautiful wood that’s great to work with and because olives and olive branches represent peace. There’s nothing we need more in this world right now. The Wenge center and overall design is a throwback to my Congo Square drum (designed in reverse tonalities) as a nod to New Orleans.
The lugs and snare throw-off and butt plate tensioner were built in collaboration with Valerio Carlini, of Treviso, Italy. He is the master craftsman at Mr Hyde Customs. It made sense to have an Italian builder create hardware for a drum made of Olivewood. I had a design in mind that mimicked the Olivewood colors and Wenge center section. Valerio built the intricate lugs and throw-off and then hand-painted each piece in a luminescent acrylic polyurethane that sparkles in the light. The lugs each have four brass face plates. On each of the plates I have my initial “MVP” and the number “76” because that’s the year I started playing drums…1976. The throw off and butt plate each have the Seven Six Drum Co logo and the Mr Hyde Customs logo. He was a pleasure to work with and a true artist.
I also mimicked the shell design in the hoops, which were built by Jody Lutz at Stellar Drums. He’s also a master at what he does, and I love that the hoops smell like olives.
This build is a culmination of my experience in drum building and a representation of my design aesthetic. When I first started building, I hoped to build 10 drums…maybe a dozen. I’m currently working on four drums which will be #106, 107, 108, and 109, so I definitely exceeded my own expectations.
*****I’m holding on to this particular drum, but I can build you something very similar with these custom lugs from Italy for $2750. You’d have full control over the design of the shell and lugs, or let me design it all.
Alternatively, you can have this drum built up as is but with your choice of any of my stock lugs and any of the throw-offs/butt plates on the other drums for the listed price of $1750
