The Granadillo Topo Map Custom Snare Drum
This 7.5x14 custom handcrafted dual-finish snare drum is built from 100% Granadillo wood staves. That lovely color and figuring is not a veneer, it’s through and through Granadillo. Granadillo is a Central America wood that is incredibly hard - about twice as hard as maple, but has a much more complex grain structure and appearance. This hard, thick exotic wood shell translates to extra volume when you really hit this drum.
As for the finish, I have been backpacking in Colorado quite a bit lately and have been looking at a lot of topographical maps. The grain structure and figuring in this wood reminded me of a topo map, so I added 16 coats of hand-rubbed Liberon finishing oil, I let it cure for 3 weeks, and then, just because I love a challenge, I decided to very carefully sand specific parts of the shell so that there would be a dual texture effect, both high gloss and satin, to give the visual effect of ridges and valleys like you’d see on a topo map. This drum has:
offset 45 degree bearing edges.
a 0.50” thick stave shell
handmade brass lugs with a satin lacquer finish and center point brass shavings inlaid in resin
brass triple flanged hoops and tension rods
Puresound Custom Pro brass 24 strand snare wires
Lacquered Brass finish throw off and butt plate
Matching air vent grommet
Remo heads.
