The Red Zebra Custom Snare Drum
This 7.5x14” custom handcrafted snare drum is built from 100% Zebrawood staves. Zebrawood is a very hard exotic wood that comes from West Africa, and this particular piece has some gorgeous featuring. Expect a very versatile drum that has a nice dry crack but can also be tuned to become warmer and fatter. As for the finish, I did a bright red stain augmented with a bit of orange dye. I applied 30 (THIRTY!) coats of 2K polyester high gloss clear coat. I sanded between each 3 coats in a manner that would allow the actual texture of the grain and some lines between staves to be seen and felt even though it’s a high-gloss finish. The goal was to make this shell a more “living/breathing” element of the drum, rather than doing a 100% smooth gloss.
