The Namibia Custom Segmented Snare Drum
This 7.75x14” custom handcrafted snare drum is built from sixty 0.6 inch thick Leopardwood staves, and twenty Zebrawood staves. I named it after the country of Namibia because in 2015, I had the honor of photographing a very rare leopard and many zebra in Etosha National Park in Namibia, so building a drum from Leopard and Zebrawood..it was a no-brainer. I topped it off with a crystal clear, glossy, glassy, pricey, pretty, durable polyester clear coat, and coated it in a manner that allows the gorgeous texture of the grain to peek through a bit. Since it is such a deep drum, I added a second small air vent in the most inconspicuous spot possible. This custom snare drum has a huge tuning range and is a beautiful example of figured exotic wood.
During the month-long build of this drum, I discovered that I am extremely allergic to Leopardwood. $300 in doctors bills, 2 visits to a dermatologist and many restless nights awakened by incessant itchiness didn’t deter me for finishing this drum. However, I will never make another drum from Leopardwood, so this is the last drum of its kind that will ever be produced by Seven Six Drum Co.
